Charme Music: the Sound of the Baile
Last updated:
The word charme names both the party and the music played at it. If you want to understand the dance, start with the sound: smooth R&B, love songs and a groove that is easy to move to in a group.
Where the name comes from
DJ Corello, one of the pioneers of Rio’s black music parties, is credited with calling this R&B “charme” around 1980. The idea came from the expression “fazer um charminho,” and for him charme was a place to be who you are.
From soul to R&B
In the 1970s Rio’s bailes black played soul and funk, a scene the press called Black Rio. In the 1980s the parties split: one side went toward fast, bass-heavy beats and became baile funk; the other kept smoother contemporary R&B and love songs, and became baile charme.
New jack swing
At the Madureira viaduct, a new generation of DJs brought new jack swing into the mix in the early 1990s, a few years after the Saturday dance started. Its swing rhythm sits well with the synchronized steps, and it is still part of the sound today.
Brazilian charme
Brazilian artists also sing for the charme crowd. Fat Family, a vocal group known for R&B, toured in 2026 with a show called “Baile Charme” and headlined the 36th anniversary of the Madureira party in May 2026.
Where to listen
Search streaming apps for charme, flashback R&B or new jack swing playlists, or go to a baile and ask the DJ. The resident DJs at Madureira in 2026 included Michell, Fernandinho, Vig, Gab and Guto.
